Members of Congress had put pressure on the high court about the subject.
On Monday, the Supreme Court of the United States announced it is adopting a code of ethics for the first time.
“The absence of a Code, however, has led in recent years to the misunderstanding that the Justices of this Court, unlike all other jurists in this country, regard themselves as unrestricted by any ethics rules,” the justices wrote. “To dispel this misunderstanding, we are issuing this Code, which largely represents a codification of principles that we have long regarded as governing our conduct.”
In recent months, some members of Congress have been critical of the nation’s highest court and some of its members, particularly regarding trips and gifts from wealthy benefactors and friends. A Gallup poll before the court’s new term began showed that public trust in the court had been impacted by the negative feedback from Congress.
